John 3:16 (NKJV)
The Gospel is the Good News that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on the cross taking the punishment of sinners, that He has risen from the grave declaring His victory over sin and death, and that any sinner who repents and believes may have forgiveness in sin and life in His name.
John 3:16 says "that whosoever believes in him..." whosoever means that anyone can come. You can come to our church whether you are black or white, rich or poor, republican or democrat. You are welcome no matter what sins you have committed. This is a place for the sick, the broken, and the wounded.
Galatians 3:28(NKJV) "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus."
To understand the Gospel we must understand that God is holy. When we say that God is holy we mean that He is perfect in righteousness and goodness, that He never does wrong, He hates evil completely, and loves good completely. Since God is holy He cannot ignore evil but as a just judge must punish it in all forms.
1 John 1:5(NKJV) "This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all."
John 3:16 says "that whosoever believes in him should not perish..." Man perishes or dies without Jesus because man is created by God for the purpose of glorifying God. But every human being has sinned and rebelled against God and deserves death and hell as the just punishment for their sins. Furthermore, when Adam sinned he represented all of mankind and earned death for us all as our representative.
Romans 3:23(NKJV) "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,"
John 3:16 says "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son". God who loves His creation and desires for it to live sends is Son to die on the cross and take the punishment of sinners. When Jesus died on the cross He took the punishment that we deserved so that we could go free. He paid our debt. Now anyone who truly trusts in Him and His payment no longer has to pay for their own sins and can share in Jesus' victory over death and sin which was declared when He rose from the dead.
1 Peter 2:24(NKJV) "[Jesus] who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed."
John 3:16 says "that whosoever believes in Him should not perish". The Gospel is not just an interesting religious fact. But we are called by God to respond to the Gospel. We must repent. That means to turn away from our sin. When you come to Christ you don't become perfect in how you live but there must be a clear turning away from sin. We must also believe. That means that we must affirm the Gospel as true but it also means that we must put our trust in Christ's death in our place and the power of His resurrection. We must abandon finding security, identity, and reward in the things of this world and instead find those things in Christ. Anyone who does not respond to the Gospel in repentance and with faith will not have their sins forgiven.
